Deion Sanders has received the all clear after a harrowing battle with bladder cancer, a fight that placed both his health and future on the sidelines for months.
The Colorado Buffaloes coach's diagnosis earlier this year brought uncertainty, but those closest to him say they never lost faith.
Defensive coordinator Robert Livingston, who oversaw the team during Sanders' treatment, revealed the coaching staff refused to even consider the possibility that their leader would not be back in Boulder to open the season.
"Prime's talking about his stance and all these things, and he wants to know how that's going," Livingston said to ESPN. "His leadership is one of one. He's the Pied Piper - the world will follow him if they just listen to him."
Building a culture of belief in Boulder
Livingston described how Sanders' influence remained intact even as he underwent treatment.
"He was away and we were working and just knowing that when he comes back, he's going to hit the ground running," he said. "That first staff meeting went about like you thought it would, 'Hey, we're going to do this. We're going to do that.'
"The conversation was never had, like 'if, then.' We knew he'd be here day one. When you're a phenomenal leader as Coach Prime is, you establish a culture, a situation where people just go to work. And that's what it was. It was a joy to see."
Sanders' battle with bladder cancer is the latest in a series of health challenges that have followed him since his arrival at Colorado. Over the past two years, he has undergone multiple surgeries to address severe circulation issues that resulted in the amputation of two toes on his left foot. Despite those setbacks, Sanders has remained an active and visible presence, pushing to transform the Buffaloes into a national storyline and restoring belief in a program that had long struggled.
Livingston's work in Sanders' absence earned him a contract extension this offseason, a reflection of his importance to the program's structure. Many had speculated he would be the natural choice to step in had Sanders been unable to return. Instead, his role now shifts back into supporting the man whose vision has completely reshaped Colorado football.
