Colorado football has been dealing with deep emotional weight since the sudden passing of promising quarterback Dominiq Ponder on March 1, 2026 at just 23 years old. His death sent ripples throughout the college football landscape, prompting messages of condolence from programs and fans nationwide.

While the loss was felt most intensely within the Colorado Buffaloes locker room, the response quickly turned into a unified effort to support his family. Head coach Deion Sanders emerged as a central figure in that support system, helping guide both players and staff through grief while staying closely connected with Ponder's loved ones.

The tragedy not only marked the end of a young athlete's journey but also strengthened the sense of community within the program, as teammates and coaches leaned on each other during an incredibly difficult period.

In an interview with EssentiallySports, Ponder's mother Catrina Hughes described the overwhelming compassion shown by the Buffaloes family. She said Coach Prime's belief in her son during recruitment and development left a lasting impact, and that same presence continues to help her cope with the loss.

"The entire Colorado football community has wrapped their arms around us," she said.

"From Coach Prime to his teammates to the fans, it's been nothing but love. Even Shedeur has stayed in touch with me, checking in daily. That kind of support... it's something we'll never forget."

A GoFundMe campaign launched in Ponder's honor aimed to raise $100,000, and within days it had already collected around $15,000, reflecting widespread support. Among contributors was former teammate Devin Moore, who donated $1,000.

Deion Sanders and Colorado's continued support

At the funeral service, Deion Sanders and members of the Colorado program attended to pay their respects, standing alongside the family in a moment of deep grief.

Sanders delivered an emotional eulogy that reflected both admiration and heartbreak, explaining how he had believed in Ponder's potential and had hoped to guide him into adulthood and success. He expressed sorrow, noting his wish to have "sent a man back" to the family after coaching him.

The message underscored how personally he took his role beyond football. Teammates, including Shedeur Sanders, remained closely involved with Hughes, maintaining regular communication and emotional support. Within the program, the loss further strengthened unity, with players leaning on one another while honoring Ponder's memory.

Colorado also announced that they would wear "DP22" decals on their uniforms throughout the season, ensuring his presence remains part of every game.

Hughes has since begun her own initiative to keep her son's legacy alive, focusing on community outreach and mentorship for young athletes. She hopes to use his story as inspiration for others.

Support from the Colorado community has encouraged her to turn grief into action, ensuring that Ponder's impact extends beyond football.
