Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders is getting ready for his third season with the Colorado Buffaloes, a team that has captured the national attention and that is ready to take their game to new heights.
Recently, the University of Colorado Boulder extended Sanders' contract as head football coach through the 2029 season. With the new deal, the former NFL Hall of Famer will be the best-paid coach on the Big 12.
Deion has orchestrated one of the biggest turnarounds in college football history, inheriting a team that went 1-11 the season before he arrived. "Coach Prime" took his team to nine wins and a bowl berth in just two seasons, and the football program is one of the most-watched in sports, attracting over 54 million viewers throughout the 2024 season.
Sanders almost gets run over during practice
Deion Sanders loves to be on the field during the Colorado Buffaloes practices, as he remembers the times he used to dominate on both sides of the ball. "Coach Prime" is known to share wisdom and insight that can make his players better.
However, being that close to the practices could be dangerous, as Sanders found out during a play. Running back Dallan Hayden - a sophomore who played in 11 games during the 2024 regular season - got away from the defense and started running down the field, with the secondary not being able to catch him. And it was one of these players that bumped hard into "Prime Time."
It was cornerback Ivan yates - a graduate student - the one that collided with Deion Sanders, who had to embrace the hit so that he wouldn't get hurt during the play. Yates tried to avoid hitting his coach but he was running af full speed and couldn't slowed down at time to not bump into his mentor.
Travis Hunter has a wild reaction to the play
Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, who was in attendance for the practice, noticed the play that could have ended with an injury for Sanders. "Coach was like 'Get off me, Ivan', don't touch me", and then he went on to recognize his former coach's greatness.
"Coach Prime has revolutionized college football and in doing so, has restored CU football to our rightful place as a national power," said Colorado's athletic director Rick George about Sanders' impact on the team. "This extension keeps him in Boulder to compete for conference and national championships in the years to come."
Sanders' impact on the university and Boulder community has been remarkable. Due in part to Coach Prime's engagement and the visibility he's created, applications to attend CU Boulder increased 20% from a year ago to over 67,000, including a 18% increase in applications from out-of-state.
