The complaint by a nurse against Michael Schumacher for the alleged rape she suffered on November 23, 2019, at the German's residence in Gland, Switzerland, has shocked the motorsport world. The newspaper 24 Heures broke the news, without revealing the name of the alleged culprit. But it did give clues: an Australian single-seater driver, currently banned for doping. His identity did not take long to come to light. Australia's Herald Sun reveals that it is Joey Mawson, who denies all the accusations.

The driver, who was born in Sydney 29 years ago, is a great friend of Mick Schumacher, son of the German legend. That is why he had access to the family home. Joey Mawson has claimed that the relationship with the nurse was consensual and has explained to the authorities that they previously kissed at a nightclub in Geneva. The nurse, for her part, claims that she was raped twice on the same night while unconscious from alcohol, specifically vodka.

The nurse filed her complaint in 2022, years after the alleged rape, a delay that is common in such cases. The trial against Joey Mawson was due to start on Wednesday 15 October in the Swiss city of Nyon, but the Australian driver did not show up. Authorities must now set a new date, which has yet to be determined.

Joey Mawson banned for doping until May 2026

After excelling in the world of karting, Joey Mawson won the ADAC Formula 4 championship in 2016, defeating Mick Schumacher, with whom he would forge a great friendship. He also won the S5000 in Australia in 2021 and 2022. His life was turned upside down when he tested positive in a doping test on May 13, 2023, for which he is banned for three years, until May 13, 2026.

The Australian explained his discomfort after what happened: "A nightmare from which I could not wake up for months. The worst thing was knowing that I had let down my parents, my team, my sponsors, my managers and everyone around me with my mistake". Now, Joey Mawson is living another critical situation in his personal life, awaiting the trial for the alleged rape of Michael Schumacher's nurse.
