Much has been said regarding Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will take place in North America next summer. Because of the war launched by the United States against the Persian nation, many voices claimed that the conditions were not suitable for the team to attend the tournament.

For weeks, there had been growing speculation about which country might replace Iran in the competition. However, new information has now emerged suggesting that the Middle Eastern nation has not officially withdrawn from the event.

According to the general secretary of the Asian Football Confederation, Windsor John, Iran has not made any official announcement stating that it will be unable to play in the World Cup. Earlier, Iran's minister of sports, Ahmad Donyamali, had suggested that due to the problems created by the conflict with the United States, described by many in the country as a war that only Washington understands, the national team might not participate in the tournament.

Although there is still no official statement confirming a withdrawal, the situation surrounding Iran's national team remains deeply complicated. The squad now finds itself in a delicate position as political tensions continue to influence the discussion about its presence in the competition.

According to John, there is still hope that Iran will eventually be able to travel to the United States and take part in the tournament as originally planned.

It's a very emotional moment. Everybody's saying a lot of things.

At the end of the day, it's the [Iranian] federation who should decide if they're playing, and as of today, the federation has told us that they are going to the World Cup.

Windsor John

They are our member. We want them to play. You know, they qualified ... so we hope that they will solve their issues, whatever it is, and be able to participate.

Windsor John

As far as we know, Iran is playing.

Donald Trump talks about Iran's participation in the World Cup

Last week, reporters asked Donald Trump whether it would be acceptable for Iranian players to travel to the United States to compete in the tournament. The president responded that the lives of the members of the Iranian national team could potentially be at risk if they were to travel to the country.

Those remarks came shortly after FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that Trump himself had assured him that Iran's national team would be welcome in the United States despite the ongoing conflict between the two countries.

It is important to remember that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

For Iran, the group stage matches currently scheduled are:

  • Against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15
  • Against Belgium on June 21
  • And finally against Egypt on June 26 in Seattle

The tensions between the two nations could still intensify, and if that happens, Iran may ultimately decide to withdraw from the tournament entirely, an event that traditionally seeks to unite nations through a message of peace with a football rolling on the field.

Although nothing has been decided yet, FIFA likely has an alternative plan ready in case the situation becomes final, and Iran cannot attend the competition despite earning its place on the field.
