Dana White must be very upset with UFC's officials. Tyrell Fortune thought he had finally closed a long chapter - only to have the moment briefly stolen by an announcer's mistake.
After earning what would be his first UFC victory, Fortune began exiting the Octagon when cage announcer Bruce Buffer mistakenly read the judges' scores for his opponent, Marcin Tybura, prompting boos from the crowd and a chaotic pause before officials corrected the call and raised Fortune's hand.
The confusion unfolded immediately after the final bell. Buffer announced the scorecards for Tybura, and Fortune, believing he had lost, walked toward the tunnel.
UFC officials quickly intervened, brought Fortune back into the cage, and then declared the official result: unanimous decision for Tyrell Fortune with scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.
Embarrassing mix-up at center of victory
"I was so upset with myself," Fortune told reporters after the fight. "I felt I didn't do enough. I was just upset. With two weeks' notice, I feel like I did a good job, but I also need to come with a better performance next time."
Buffer apologized to the crowd before correcting the announcement:
Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the mix-up. The scoring is 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27 to the winner by unanimous decision, Tyrell Fortune.
The emotional roller coaster - from the low of thinking he had lost to the high of being declared the winner - left Fortune visibly shaken but ultimately relieved.
Once I was walking out of the Octagon, I was just upset and frustrated with myself that I didn't get the performance that I felt that I could.
"It was a little upsetting, feeling that I lost. But them having to come back in and get the win and getting my hand raised made everything feel right," he said.
Fortune's long road to the Octagon
Fortune's path to this moment has been anything but straightforward. A former Division II national champion wrestler, the 35-year-old endured a near-death scare in 2012 when complications during a weight cut left him briefly pronounced dead; he later made a full recovery.
He spent years building his professional résumé in regional promotions, fought in Bellator MMA from 2016 to 2023, and made appearances in the PFL's 2024 regular season before finally securing his first UFC victory nearly a decade after his pro debut.
Seen as a top prospect earlier in his career, Fortune acknowledged both the achievement and the work ahead. He praised his preparation on short notice but vowed to deliver a stronger performance next time.
