The United States' two Olympic hockey teams, both women's and men's, captured gold medals at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Their performances were spectacular. The women's squad shone brilliantly. In the final minutes of regulation, they tied the game and forced overtime, where the momentum built late in the contest propelled them to score the decisive goal.

Both US teams faced representatives from the country of the maple leaf. After the celebrations began and continued inside the locker room, they received a phone call from Donald Trump congratulating them on their victories.

However, during that call, a moment unfolded that set the internet ablaze. Trump made a joke that did not sit well with many. The players appeared caught off guard and, perhaps unsure how to respond without derailing the conversation, reacted with laughter.

Jeremy Swayman says they could have responded better

Days after that uncomfortable exchange, when Trump said he would invite them to the State of the Union but joked that if he failed to include the women's team, he could be impeached, the remark generated laughter among players, though not among viewers who heard it.

I must tell you, we're gonna have to bring the women's team. You do know that," he said. "I do believe I probably would be impeached.

While the comment drew chuckles at the time, many fans of the women's team did not find it amusing.

With the gold medal now hanging around his neck and reflecting on the episode, Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman admitted that the team should have handled the situation differently in response to what many considered a distasteful joke.

We should have reacted differently. We know that.

He told reporters after Bruins practice on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

A slight against the United States women's hockey team

For thousands of people, the situation felt deeply offensive. It appeared to diminish the accomplishments of the women, who had worked tirelessly and summoned their greatest strengths to secure the gold medal.

Swayman later clarified that there had been no intention to disrespect anyone, particularly the women's hockey team.

We are so excited for the women's team and so much respect.".... "To share that gold with them is something we're forever grateful for.

Jeremy Swayman

For some users across the internet and social media, the moment overshadowed the women's achievement. Swayman subsequently emphasized that the attention should have been directed toward celebrating the gold medal itself.

Nevertheless, the comment resonated strongly with critics who felt it reflected a dismissive tone. What should have been an unequivocal celebration of excellence instead became a broader conversation about respect, recognition, and the importance of honoring the accomplishments of female athletes on equal footing with their male counterparts.
