- Sports. Lindsey Vonn suffers tragic loss while trying to recover her leg: My first love
Cristiano Ronaldo sent an inspiring message to Lindsey Vonn after the American Alpine skier revealed she almost lost her left leg following a crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan this February.
Vonn's crash occurred in the women's Olympic downhill on February 8, 2026, just 13 seconds into her run at Milano Cortina. She was airlifted off the course and diagnosed with a complex tibia fracture, a serious leg injury that required urgent medical attention.
Compartment syndrome was also discovered in her leg, a dangerous condition in which pressure builds inside muscles, restricting blood flow and risking tissue death. Without treatment, it could have led to amputation of her left leg.
In addition to the tibia fracture, Vonn also broke her right ankle, complicating her recovery. She spent several weeks in an Italian hospital undergoing multiple surgeries before being discharged to the United States for ongoing treatment.
Vonn had come out of retirement to compete, after previously rupturing her left ACL at a World Cup event days earlier.
She remains wheelchair-bound and focused on a rehabilitation plan that could take around a year before she decides on further surgery to repair her injuries.
Medical teams have confirmed that her recovery will be extensive, likely requiring additional operations and physical therapy to restore strength and mobility. Despite this, Vonn remains determined and grateful for the care she received.
And support from athletes and fans has poured in worldwide, including a heartfelt note from Ronaldo, one of the greatest soccer players of all-time.
"Champions are defined by the moments they win," Ronaldo said. "And the moments they refuse to give up.
"Lindsey Vonn, the mountains you conquered were never bigger than the strength you carry. Keep fighting. Legends always rise."
Cristiano Ronaldo says he won't quit Al-Nassr
Meanwhile Ronaldo recently addressed speculation about his future at Al-Nassr, following reports of dissatisfaction with the Saudi Arabian club run by the Public Investment Fund. After missing three matches, he returned and scored twice in a 4 0 victory over Al-Hazem.
The 41-year-old Portuguese forward insisted he wants to stay at Al-Nassr, emphasizing his happiness in Saudi Arabia and the support his family and friends have received, while focusing on helping the club compete for the league title.
Ronaldo moved to the Middle East in December 2022 after leaving Manchester United, becoming football's highest-paid player with a £177 million annual salary. Since joining, the club has won the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup, and they are now leading the Saudi Pro League by one point ahead of Al-Hilal and advancing in the AFC Asian Cup quarter-finals.
This combined story highlights Ronaldo's support for Vonn during a challenging recovery and underscores his own ongoing ambitions and determination at Al-Nassr.
