- Olympic Games / Skiing. Lindsey Vonn: "My cruciate ligament had nothing to do with my fall"
Great names in sports are built on the results they achieve in international competitions that place them at the top of their discipline. It is the accumulation of years of work that carries them to the highest step of the podium, and that is how their name becomes a sporting reference.
That is why, after the tragic fall suffered by Olympic athlete Lindsey Vonn, she immediately received support from another Olympic great, Simone Biles. Both have dominated their sports, and beyond sisterhood, it is also sporting support and camaraderie that connects them.
Vonn was competing in her fifth Winter Olympics, where she had won three medals, while Biles had done the same in the summer edition with eleven podium finishes. That speaks of only one thing: greatness.
A Milan Cortina appearance by Lindsey Vonn that ended her career
Only a week before the start of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Lindsey Vonn suffered a serious injury that left her with a torn ACL. However, the 41-year-old athlete returned to training despite the severe setback and was considered "ready" to compete.
Unfortunately, in her first appearance at the Games, it became clear that her knee lacked the necessary strength, and she suffered another brutal fall and an even more serious injury than the one she already carried.
With the injury in her left knee, she pushed her body to the limit and took part on Sunday, February 8, 2026, but was unable to finish the downhill final. In one turn, her knee could not hold, and it gave out completely.
Vonn had to be airlifted from the course, and it was later announced that she would undergo surgery, ruling out any chance of returning to competition in Milan Cortina.
Lindsey Vonn sends a heartfelt message
Through her social media accounts, Lindsey Vonn shared a message with her followers about the unfortunate events that ended with the severe injury she suffered.
In it, she expressed regret for having competed while injured, but at the same time said she hoped to become a source of inspiration for others. She also explained that she sustained a complicated tibia fracture that would require multiple surgeries.
Several athletes responded with messages of support. One of them was Simone Biles, who sent her a series of hearts.
I'm proud of you for doing that. You are a lesson for all women that we are more than our age and people's perceptions.
Forever an inspiration
The world is so proud of you. I am so proud of you.
With you...
- 84 World Cup victories
- 145 World Cup podiums
- 4 crystal globes in 2004, 2009, 2010, and 2012
- 16 discipline titles: 8 downhill, 5 super-G, and 3 combined
- 3 Olympic medals: 1 gold, 2 bronze

Now it is time for her to recover and perhaps transition into coaching to prepare the next generations.
