The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina were expected to begin with intense competition in women's ice hockey, but an unexpected health scare has already disrupted the tournament.

A norovirus outbreak within Team Finland forced organizers to postpone a highly anticipated preliminary-round clash against Team Canada, originally scheduled for February 5.

The illness has created uncertainty around multiple matchups and raised concerns about athlete health throughout the Games.

Per ESPN insider Emily Kaplan, the situation has shown signs of improvement, though it remains far from resolved.

In a post on X, Kaplan shared the latest developments surrounding the outbreak and its impact on competition schedules: "Olympic norovirus update: Finland women's hockey had 14 practice today, the rest quarantining. They're optimistic for Saturday vs USA.

"NHL players supposed to stay in village- but there's hotels for families & some federations say players could stay there if it becomes an issue."

The update reflected modest progress for Team Finland, which has slowly seen more players return to training. Reports indicated that 11 skaters and all three goaltenders were able to participate in Friday's practice session.

This marked an improvement from the previous day, when only eight skaters and two goalies were available as 13 players battled illness or remained in quarantine. However, the roster remains incomplete, making full tactical preparation difficult for upcoming games.

The disruption forced Olympic officials to reschedule the Finland versus Canada matchup for February 12. However, Finland is still expected to face Team USA in its scheduled contest, provided the team can field a competitive lineup.

The rapid spread of the virus illustrates how vulnerable international sporting events remain to contagious illnesses, even with strict medical protocols in place.

Virus spreads across multiple teams

Norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness, can spread rapidly in close living quarters, making Olympic villages particularly vulnerable.

The outbreak first surfaced Tuesday night when several players from Team Finland suddenly became ill.

By Wednesday evening, just one day before the original matchup against Team Canada, the situation escalated significantly.

Officials from Finland, Canada, the International Olympic Committee, the International Ice Hockey Federation, and organizers from the Milan Olympics 2026 held emergency discussions to determine the best course of action.

The decision to postpone the game prioritized athlete safety while allowing medical teams time to manage the outbreak.

The health situation has drawn reactions from athletes across the Olympic community. Denmark men's hockey player Oliver Lauridsen expressed sympathy for the affected players while emphasizing the importance of strict health precautions.

"Unfortunately it's part of life, and you feel bad for the Finnish women," Lauridsen said.

"You've got to wash your hands. You've got to be careful and whatever. And then there's a good medical staff here to help. Just the fact that they would postpone a game also means that there is help to get and solutions in place in case stuff like this happens."

Positive COVID tests also present

Unfortunately, Team Finland is not the only squad dealing with illness concerns. Reports indicate that Team Switzerland is also facing similar challenges.

After one player tested positive for a stomach illness shortly after competing against Team Czech Republic, the entire Swiss team entered isolation protocols.

The outbreak forced Switzerland to miss the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, further highlighting the seriousness of the health risks.

The viral issues are not limited to norovirus alone. Prior to the start of the Milan Olympics 2026, two staff members from Team Australia tested positive for COVID.

For now, the primary focus remains the recovery of Team Finland and other affected delegations. The ability of these teams to regain full strength could significantly influence early tournament outcomes.

While Olympic competition is defined by skill and preparation, the ongoing outbreak has introduced an unpredictable variable that could reshape the women's ice hockey tournament at the Milan Olympics 2026.
