Ron Duguay has revealed he has been battling Stage 4 cancer for the past year, a diagnosis that began in his colon and has since required multiple surgeries.

The disease has already led to the removal of his appendix and gallbladder, and recent medical updates have forced him to confront new decisions about how aggressively to pursue further treatment.

"I find it extremely hard asking for funds for all these costs I'm going through," he said. "Normally I'm helping others."

The financial strain has become as daunting as the medical one. Rather than center the conversation on legacy or hockey accolades, Duguay speaks about flights, therapies, appointments, and the unpredictable costs of long-term care.

His daughters recently launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $26,000 to help offset those expenses.

"Because of his cancer, he hasn't been able to work the way he normally would," his daughter Shay wrote on the fundraising page. "Earlier in his treatment journey, the care he received in Florida nearly cost him his life. That led us to bring him to Orange County, where my sister and I live, so he could receive treatment here."

Determined to fight beyond the diagnosis

The move created a new routine. Duguay now travels every two weeks between Florida and Orange County for ongoing care.

"The cost of constant travel, along with medical care, holistic therapies, supplements, and alternative healing approaches he has committed to, has become extremely overwhelming financially," Shay wrote.

Unlike many patients who rely solely on one approach, Duguay says he is combining traditional oncology with alternative therapies determined to leave no option unexplored.

"I am going to do all the alternative along with the Western medicine," he added. "What I am learning I will be able to share with others."

The physical toll has been severe. Duguay described cancer as something that drains not just strength but spirit.

"Cancer sucks the life out of you," he noted. It is also "so freaking costly."
