Six years after retiring from the NFL, Robert Griffin III is planning a spectacular comeback. However, it's not what fans might have expected. With the Los Angeles Olympics just a couple of years away, the former NFL star is considering trying his luck in another sport.
After being selected second overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by the then-Washington Redskins, Griffin seemed destined to become the next NFL superstar.
In fact, the Baylor alum was named NFL Rookie of the Year and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2012. However, an injury that same year derailed his career.
Although Griffin returned from injury to play a total of eight seasons in the NFL, he was never the same player again. Now, the former Redskins star is eyeing an unexpected comeback.
Griffin has his sights set on the 2028 Olympics
With flag football set to make its debut at the Los Angeles Olympics, even Griffin is willing to try his luck in this non-contact, but much faster, version of football.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the player-turned-analyst announced that he had received an invitation to try out for Team USA:
God's plan. The work is just getting started. Excited to work with my new teammates. USA! USA! USA!
The former Washington quarterback will be just one of the NFL players vying for a spot on the team, competing against equally athletic flag football players who have spent their entire lives playing this sport.
Who will Robert Griffin be competing against?
Beyond the rule changes that will force current and former NFL players to make significant adjustments, Griffin will face several quarterbacks with years of experience in the sport for a spot on the team:
- Darrell Doucette III
- Nico Casares
- Antonio Coleman
That's not even counting NFL stars like Joe Burrow, Tom Brady, and even Patrick Mahomes, who have expressed interest in joining the Olympic team. Griffin has never been one to back down from a challenge, but he faces an uphill battle.
