A.J. Brown's flirtation with the Patriots puts the Eagles on edge

The receiver increasingly appears closer to leaving Philadelphia than staying

The 2025 season was, to put it mildly, highly unusual for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown. He experienced serious issues with quarterback Jalen Hurts, a situation in which Saquon Barkley intervened, though it seems the attempt did not produce the desired reconciliation.

The team continued under the dark dynamic that unfolded throughout the previous campaign. There was no communication between the signal-caller and his primary receiver, in addition to the limited number of plays Brown received over the course of the season.

Amid all of that, rumors began to circulate about a possible departure from the franchise in search of a new destination where he would receive more opportunities and a greater chance to continue thriving.

It is worth recalling that Brown is a highly individualistic player who cares little, if at all, about collective performance if he is not prominently featured in games. That detail alone should be carefully considered by any potential team interested in acquiring him.

Will AJ Brown become a Patriot?

During a conversation the Eagles receiver had with Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman on their podcast, the former Patriots wideout jokingly teased AJ.

Just remember, we're all Patriots."..."You know that, right?

Julian Edelman

Gronkowski, the former New England and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end, then added:

Are you going to be a Patriot?

Rob Gronkowski

Oh."... "No!"..."I'm trolling.

AJ Brown

The Philadelphia receiver responded while laughing.

AJ Brown's past with Mike Vrabel

Before becoming a prominent Eagle, AJ Brown spent his first three NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans under Mike Vrabel, who now leads the Patriots, and in his first year with the franchise, reached the Super Bowl.

On the program where he appeared, Brown stated that he did not enjoy his time playing under Vrabel because of the coach's strong emphasis on accountability. At that time, the Titans' quarterback was Ryan Tannehill, who bears no comparison to Drake Maye.

Despite that, in his rookie season in 2019, Brown delivered an impressive performance:

  • 1,051 yards
  • 8 touchdowns

What followed was even better once he settled in Philadelphia:

  • 1,496 yards
  • 11 touchdowns

However, over the past two years, his production has declined, and the player's dissatisfaction led him to speak openly about the situation to the point that team owner Jeffrey Lurie asked him to stop doing so.

Although he would represent a major acquisition for the Patriots, they are not entirely certain about bringing him into their ranks. They currently have Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte, both of whom have demonstrated efficiency and reliability within the system.
