All roads lead back to Geno Smith. At least, that's currently the case for the New York Jets. This week, the Jets and Las Vegas Raiders agreed on a trade to send Smith to New York following an extremely unsuccessful one-year stint with the Raiders.
Smith hasn't been the same quarterback he was during his first two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. After a mediocre final season in Seattle, Smith struggled mightily on a bad Raiders team in 2025. Now, he returns to the Jets, the team that originally drafted him.
In a way, it's a full circle moment for Smith and the New York franchise. Smith was picked 39th overall in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Jets. He immediately became the team's starting quarterback as a rookie, aided by a Mark Sanchez shoulder injury. It didn't take long for Smith to flame out, losing his starting job within two seasons.
New York Jets have used 16 starting quarterbacks since drafting Geno Smith in 2013
The Jets haven't been able to find any stability at the quarterback position since Smith was drafted. In fact, they have used 15 different starting quarterbacks since then - aside from Smith. None of them worked out.
- Geno Smith: 2013, 2014, 2016
- Michael Vick: 2014
- Ryan Fitzpatrick: 2015, 2016
- Bryce Petty: 2016, 2017
- Josh McCown: 2017, 2018
- Sam Darnold: 2018, 2019, 2020
- Luke Falk: 2019
- Trevor Siemian: 2019, 2023
- Joe Flacco: 2020, 2021, 2022
- Zach Wilson: 2021, 2022, 2023
- Mike White: 2021, 2022
- Tim Boyle: 2023
- Aaron Rodgers: 2023, 2024
- Justin Fields: 2025
- Tyrod Taylor: 2025
- Brady Cook: 2025
2023 was particularly chaotic, as it was the season where Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles during his first game as a member of the Jets. New York then turned to Zach Wilson, a former No. 2 overall pick who had lost his starting job.
The Jets have a truly awful track record with quarterbacks. Perhaps Smith's second stint with the franchise will prove more fruitful than the first.
