Former New York Jets linebacker Darron Lee is facing the possibility of the death penalty after prosecutors unveiled disturbing new allegations in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo.
Lee, who was selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, was denied bond during a court hearing Wednesday.
He is currently charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, according to local reporting. As the case progresses, prosecutors have signaled their intent to pursue capital punishment.
The allegations stem from an incident at a Tennessee residence where Perpétuo was discovered deceased.
In court, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Detective Brian Lockhart, one of the first investigators to arrive on the scene, described a chaotic and graphic setting that directly contradicted the explanation allegedly offered by Lee.
Horrific details from the scene emerge
Prosecutors stated there was "blood in just about every room" of the home, including inside a vehicle parked in the garage. The extensive blood evidence, they argue, undermines any claim of an accidental fall.
"The scene was in disarray," Lockhart testified. "You walked in the door, there were boxes. A lot of stuff in the living room. The deceased was in the floor lying on her back."
According to testimony, Lee was present at the residence when law enforcement arrived. He allegedly told investigators that Perpétuo suffered from narcolepsy and may have fallen in the shower, which he suggested could explain her injuries.
However, investigators quickly challenged that version of events based on the physical evidence documented throughout the property.
"There was blood going up the staircase, on the hand railing there was blood, on the walls there was blood, on the floor in the living room there was blood, in the floor on the hallway and the stairs.. there was blood in just about every room except one," Lockhart told the court.
The autopsy findings further strengthened the prosecution's case. Perpétuo was reportedly discovered topless and had sustained severe brain trauma, a broken neck, bruising across multiple areas of her body, and a large bite mark on both her shoulder and thigh.
Authorities also cited stab wounds to her legs. The official cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.
The accumulation of injuries, paired with the blood evidence throughout the home, has led prosecutors to pursue the most severe charge available under Tennessee law.
First-degree murder convictions in the state can carry the death penalty if certain aggravating circumstances are proven in court.
A promising career looks to be over
Lee's football career once positioned him among the league's promising young defensive talents.
After being drafted 20th overall by the Jets in 2016, he spent three seasons with the franchise before later stints with other NFL teams.
His professional trajectory, however, has now been eclipsed by the gravity of these allegations. With bond denied, Lee remains in custody as legal proceedings move forward.
Prosecutors are expected to continue presenting forensic and testimonial evidence to support their pursuit of capital punishment.
The case has sent shockwaves through both the local community and the football world. As court proceedings unfold, the focus will remain on the judicial process and the serious charges confronting the former NFL linebacker.
