The Minnesota Vikings are heading into a crucial 2026 offseason that could reshape the trajectory of their quarterback room after a challenging 2025 season.

The team's primary goal is to stabilize the position around J.J. McCarthy, who showed flashes of potential but struggled with injuries. The young quarterback missed seven games due to recurring health issues, leaving the Vikings to rely on undrafted rookie Max Brosmer.

While Brosmer worked hard, he was unable to maintain the offense, leading to a string of frustrating losses that highlighted Minnesota's lack of depth at quarterback. Although McCarthy ended the season on a high note, throwing five touchdowns in his last four games, concerns over his long-term durability remain significant.

In response to these struggles, Minnesota's front office is reportedly exploring the addition of a veteran quarterback who could provide both mentorship and insurance for McCarthy.

Multiple reports suggest that the Vikings are considering familiar territory, with the idea of reuniting with former quarterback Kirk Cousins gaining traction. Cousins, who led the Vikings from 2018 through 2023, has a strong connection with head coach Kevin O'Connell and the organization as a whole.

During his six seasons in Minnesota, Cousins posted some of the most productive years of his career and developed a strong rapport with the coaching staff and fans, making him a natural candidate to return.

Could Kirk Cousins return to Minnesota?

Currently with the Atlanta Falcons, Cousins' future in Georgia has become uncertain. The Falcons and Cousins recently restructured the final two years of his contract, significantly lowering his 2026 salary while moving $32.9 million of guaranteed money into 2027.

This restructuring effectively set up a potential release, as keeping him beyond March 13 would commit Atlanta to nearly $68 million in guaranteed salary for 2027, a massive financial burden the team is unlikely to accept. Should the Falcons release Cousins, he would once again enter free agency and have the opportunity to seek a starting role elsewhere.

The appeal of a Minnesota return is clear. Cousins' familiarity with O'Connell's offensive system, combined with his previous experience with the Vikings, could provide immediate stability for McCarthy and the team as a whole.

More importantly, his presence would allow McCarthy to develop without the pressure of carrying the team alone, while ensuring the Vikings have a proven veteran ready to step in if injuries strike again. League insiders believe that if the terms align, Cousins could be open to returning to the franchise where he spent the most productive years of his career.

As the 2026 offseason approaches, all eyes will be on Minnesota's quarterback strategy. Whether the Vikings ultimately reunite with Cousins or explore other veteran options, one thing is clear: securing stability at the position will be essential for a team determined to compete.
