- NFL. Matthew Stafford speaks out about his retirement after painful loss to the Seahawks
The Los Angeles Rams' season ended in painful fashion on January 25, and with emotions still raw, head coach Sean McVay found himself facing immediate questions about Matthew Stafford's future.
After a dramatic NFC Championship loss to the Seattle Seahawks, attention quickly shifted from the scoreboard to the long-term outlook of the franchise and the direction it may take moving forward.
The defeat, decided by a narrow 31-27 margin, capped a tense rivalry clash in which both teams traded momentum, big plays, and late-game pressure in front of a national audience.
Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold delivered a standout performance, throwing for 346 yards and three touchdowns, while the Rams' veteran passer matched him with 374 yards and three scores.
Despite the offensive fireworks, Los Angeles came up just short, and the missed opportunity immediately reignited speculation about whether Stafford would continue his career.
When asked directly about his quarterback's plans, McVay bristled at the suggestion that change might be coming.
"Yeah, I mean, if he still wants to play, what the hell kind of question is that?" McVay said, per the X account of Fox Sports: NFL.
The sharp response reflected both frustration and loyalty, as the coach made it clear he still views Stafford as central to the team's competitive ambitions.
Will Matt Stafford retire from the NFL?
The conversation around Stafford intensified following the loss, especially given his age and the physical toll of nearly two decades in professional football.
The 17-year veteran has consistently battled injuries and pressure, yet he continues to deliver high-level performances when the stakes are highest.
"Given his age, you have to wonder what comes next for Matthew Stafford," Ian Rapoport told the Insiders on January 26.
"My understanding, though, is that Stafford has told people close to him that he still has some good football left, telling them no matter what, he wants to be back next year."
"This was before the Rams went on a run and ended up in the NFC Championship Game. No one knows for sure... if the Rams win the Super Bowl, does Matthew Stafford walk away?"
"But we know he believes he has plenty left."
Rapoport's comments suggested that, rather than being discouraged, the quarterback may feel motivated by the playoff run and eager to pursue unfinished business.
Statistically, the 2025 season offered strong evidence that Stafford remains highly productive, finishing with 4,707 passing yards, 46 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions.
Those numbers ranked among the best of his career, earning him recognition as one of five finalists for the AP NFL MVP award.
Since joining Los Angeles, he has played a crucial role in reshaping the franchise, highlighted by the Super Bowl victory over Cincinnati following the 2021 campaign.
Meanwhile, McVay has continued to build stability, closing his ninth season as head coach with a 92-57 regular-season record and consistent postseason success.
Together, the coach and quarterback have formed one of the league's most durable partnerships, balancing innovation with experience.
