- Raiders Fernando Mendoza claims that an NFL team requested his arrest before the Draft
In a combine week moment that may hint at the trajectory of the 2026 NFL Draft's first overall selection, quarterback Fernando Mendoza offered a candid look at his recent meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders and his excitement about a potential mentorship with seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.
The conversation, brief though it was, underscored how widely respected Brady remains around the league, even among the next generation of elite signal-callers.
"I mean, who hasn't admired Tom Brady?" Mendoza said Friday morning.
"That opportunity would be fantastic. Tom Brady, I believe, was the greatest quarterback of all time by a wide margin, and to be able to have the opportunity to be mentored by him would mean so much."
Mendoza continued, "I'm all about learning. From day one, I've got to absorb as much as I can. To potentially have a mentor like that would be really meaningful."
Despite heavy speculation that the Raiders will use their pick atop April's draft to select Mendoza - a consensus No. 1 choice - the prospect was quick to temper expectations that his path is already decided.
"Well, the pick has not been selected yet," he said. "Whatever team drafts me, I'm extremely grateful. Whether it's the No. 1 pick or the last pick in the draft, I'd be blessed and honored to be drafted by any team and give them my all."
Fresh impressions from the Raiders interview
Mendoza also came away impressed by his formal interview with the Raiders, which included a detailed review of plays from his college career.
During the 20-minute session, he drew plays on a whiteboard and walked the coaching staff through his decision-making and mechanics.
"It was a fantastic interview," Mendoza said.
"We went over plays, drew things out, and discussed my college film. It was clear they were evaluating everything. It was professional, thorough, and a great opportunity to show what I can do.
"I know the No. 1 pick is theirs right now, but anything can happen in the draft. I'm just excited to play and give everything I have to whichever team selects me."
Raiders leaders have made no secret of their desire to find a long-term answer at quarterback after languishing through a 3-14 season and significant instability under center.
Mendoza's credentials are hard to argue with. He led Indiana to the program's first national championship during an undefeated 2025 season and captured the Heisman Trophy, appearing on 95.16% of ballots-a mark tied with Marcus Mariota for the second-highest in award history.
With the NFL Draft approaching, Mendoza remains focused. Whatever team calls his name, he plans to learn, adapt, and perform at the highest level-with a potential Hall of Fame mentor by his side.
