- Dallas Cowboys. Michael Irvin announces a tragic loss in his family that has left him devastated
The Dallas Cowboys are heading into the 2026 NFL season with renewed optimism after a disappointing 2025 campaign, during which a high-powered offense was undermined by one of the league's weakest defensive units.
The performance prompted sweeping changes across both the roster and coaching staff.
After just one season as defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus was replaced by Christian Parker, a rising star from the Philadelphia Eagles known for aggressive schemes and strong secondary coverage. Parker is expected to reshape Dallas' defense and instill a more disruptive style of play.
To support the new defensive vision, the Cowboys made several key additions. Safety Jalen Thompson joined from the Arizona Cardinals on a three-year deal, while Derrion Kendrick arrived from the Los Angeles Rams on a one-year contract. Edge rusher Rashan Gary was also added via trade to strengthen the pass rush.
Key defensive additions set to transform Cowboys' secondary
One acquisition that could fly under the radar but prove crucial is cornerback Cobie Durant, formerly with the Rams, signed to a one-year deal. Durant offers versatility as a slot corner and could immediately elevate Dallas' pass defense.
"A versatile, playmaking cornerback who mostly fills a need as a slot defender," Eric Williams said on Fox Sports.
"Durant will not only be an upgrade to the Cowboys' secondary, but he'll improve the backend of their defense on a pretty valuable contract. Dallas signed Durant to a team-friendly deal that includes $1.5 million in guaranteed money. Durant has seven career interceptions, including two returned for four touchdowns in four NFL seasons."
Durant's presence is expected to help Christian Parker implement his defensive schemes efficiently. Rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez also enters the fold, bringing high expectations after a standout college career at Texas Tech.
Rodriguez, the 2025 Butkus Award winner and fifth-place Heisman finisher, totaled 255 tackles, six sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and five interceptions over his final two college seasons. His ball-hawking ability is aimed at creating turnovers and energizing the defense.
The defensive line received a boost with veteran Jonathan Bullard, who joins on a one-year deal for his 11th NFL season. Bullard has experience with six teams, including the Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings, and New Orleans Saints.
Last season, he posted 26 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two pass breakups in 15 games with New Orleans. Bullard reunites with former Vikings defensive line coach Marcus Dixon, bringing leadership and scheme knowledge to the Cowboys' revamped line.
The defensive front now features Bullard alongside nose tackle Otito Ogbonnia and edge rusher Rashan Gary, forming a core group capable of executing Parker's aggressive vision.
With a balanced mix of youth and veteran experience, Dallas looks to address the defensive shortcomings of 2025 while providing mentorship for younger players.
As Dak Prescott and Kenny Clark anchor the roster alongside these additions, the Cowboys hope their fortified defense will complement the offense and create a more complete team for the 2026 season.
