Shedeur Sanders, who navigated his rookie NFL season wearing number 12, has officially switched back to the number 2, the same digit that defined his record-breaking tenures at Jackson State and the University of Colorado.
The move became possible after veteran wide receiver DeAndre Carter, the previous occupant of the jersey, departed Cleveland Browns as a free agent following the 2025 season.
For the Sanders family, the change is more than a simple equipment swap; it is the restoration of the "SS2" identity that fueled Shedeur Sanders' rise to the professional ranks.
"Yes Lawd! #2 is who he is, now let the church shout AMEN!," Deion Sanders wrote on Instagram.
The transition back to his roots comes after a debut season in Cleveland that was defined by sudden elevation and statistical grit. Originally a fifth-round selection, Sanders spent the early months of the 2025 campaign as a third-string developmental prospect behind veteran Joe Flacco and fellow newcomer Dillon Gabriel.
His opportunity arrived in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens, followed by a permanent promotion to the starting role in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Over eight games, Sanders completed 120 of 212 passes for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns. While he faced rookie growing pains, evidenced by 10 interceptions and a 68.1 passer rating, he also flashed the mobility that made him a collegiate star, adding 169 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
A legacy retired in Boulder reborn in Cleveland
The reverence for the number 2 within the Sanders camp is rooted in its official immortality at the collegiate level. During Colorado Buffaloes' Black & Gold spring game on 19 April 2025, the program took the rare step of retiring the jersey number in Shedeur Sanders' honor, alongside teammate Travis Hunter's number 12.
This tribute acknowledged Sanders' role in orchestrating one of the most televised turnarounds in recent college football history, including a 9-4 record and an Alamo Bowl appearance in 2024.
However, the program struggled to maintain that momentum in the wake of his departure, as Deion Sanders' Colorado Buffaloes finished a difficult 2025 season with a 3-9 overall record and only a single victory in Big 12 play.
The timing of the jersey switch coincides with a pivotal offseason for the Browns' quarterback room. New offensive coordinator Todd Monken has been vocal about Sanders' "elite playmaking ability" while stopping short of naming him the definitive starter for the 2026/27 season.
