Why Shedeur Sanders can feel calm with the Cleveland Browns?... For now

The Cleveland Browns are a completely unbalanced team

There is no doubt that the Cleveland Browns may be the most dysfunctional franchise in NFL history. Not only because they have never won a Super Bowl, but because poor decision-making has kept the team stagnant. Only occasionally do they bring joy to a fan base that remains one of the most loyal in the league season after season.

Right now, the Browns have one of the best defenses in the NFL, led by Myles Garrett, who recently broke the single-season sack record with 23, surpassing T.J. Watt and the legendary Lawrence Taylor. On the other hand, the offense is one of the worst in the league, which is not surprising considering they used three different quarterbacks in 2025.

The offense has several key pieces, but above all, it lacks a reliable quarterback after having used Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders. It's hard to believe they once had Baker Mayfield - including a playoff victory - and chose to move on from him to sign Deshaun Watson, who remains on the roster and has been a major disappointment.

The Cleveland Browns want to strengthen the quarterback position

As of now, the starting job for 2026 appears to be between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders - but only for now, since the Draft and free agency have yet to take place. What is certain is that Todd Monken, the team's new head coach, must be surgical with this decision because he simply cannot afford to get it wrong.

Currently, three quarterbacks are under contract: Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel. However, there are more questions than answers surrounding all of them. That's why it makes sense for Monken to explore both free agency and the Draft.

In free agency, Malik Willis is a notable name. Over four years, he has made six starts. As a backup with the Green Bay Packers, he performed well and is highly valued at the moment, which makes a move to Cleveland unlikely. "It doesn't seem likely that (Malik) Willis ends up in Cleveland," Jeremy Fowler reported on ESPN.com.

Therefore, it will be difficult for Willis to land in Cleveland. Additionally, he remains a significant risk due to his limited NFL experience. What could tempt the Browns to take that risk is that the Liberty product has similarities to Lamar Jackson, the quarterback Todd Monken worked with in Baltimore - where Jackson won his second career MVP award in 2023.
