When you've used three quarterbacks in 11 weeks of an NFL season, it means you're in trouble - and that's exactly what has happened to the Browns this year. It's no surprise for this franchise, as since 1999 they've managed only four winning seasons and just one playoff win in that span.
Joe Flacco began the season as the starter. Then in Week 5, Dillon Gabriel took over, and now it appears Shedeur Sanders will get his turn if the former Oregon Ducks quarterback doesn't clear the concussion protocol. Kevin Stefanski has already stated that Sanders will start if Gabriel is not medically cleared.
Sanders entered at the start of the second half in the game between the Browns and the Baltimore Ravens, and he didn't look good. Yes, his entrance was emotional, and he completed his first two passes, but then his performance collapsed. After the game it was confirmed that Sanders had never practiced with the first team, and it showed.
Dillon Gabriel was a talent projected to go in the sixth round of the Draft
The biggest controversy of last year's Draft was undoubtedly the case of Shedeur Sanders, who was selected in the fifth round with pick 144, despite being projected as a first-round talent. Sanders was the second-highest-graded QB, only behind Cam Ward, yet still ended up being the sixth quarterback taken in April, a situation that remains unexplained.
Among the quarterbacks chosen before him was his teammate Dillon Gabriel, who did not appear as a third-round talent in any mock drafts. After six starts with the Browns, it has become clear that he was not a third-round prospect, despite being selected there by Kevin Stefanski and company. Gabriel has surpassed 200 passing yards in only one game and has shown obvious shortcomings.
NFL analyst Jordan Reid appeared on 92.3 The Fan and had strong words on Gabriel: "No... he doesn't have the necessary arm strength," Reid said. "I thought they drafted him way too early. I had him graded as a sixth-round prospect, and they ended up taking him in round three."
Gabriel practiced with the first team at times during preseason, something Sanders never had the chance to do. Now it's Sanders' moment - to practice throughout the week and prove he is an NFL quarterback when he faces the Las Vegas Raiders, one of the teams that ultimately shut the door on him when the former Colorado Buffaloes QB was strongly linked to them.
