The Buffalo Bills' search for a new head coach isn't going as planned. Nearly a week after firing Sean McDermott, the team has only interviewed one candidate, and it also seems they aren't willing to give Bill Belichick a shot.
Since the current NFL head coaching job market began, Bill Belichick's name has been linked to various teams, without any concrete results.
Some analysts believed the former Patriots coach could fill the position McDermott vacated. However, the Bills seem to be steering clear of him.
According to Pro Football Talk insider Mike Florio, "The Bills are not interested in Bill Belichick." Moreover, according to sources:
"He's currently regarded as radioactive by most NFL teams looking for coaches."
Belichick closed the door on the NFL himself
According to the analyst, the current head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels is solely responsible for his situation, with three main factors weighing on the NFL's perception of him:
1) The strange distractions he has created during his tenure at UNC. Many of them related to his girlfriend, Jordan Hudson, 49 years his junior.
2) His open hostility toward Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Many executives fear that "eventually, some of that same venom will be directed at his next former team."
3) The concern that Belichick will attempt a complete takeover of his new team by firing long-time employees. "That's what apparently derailed Belichick's candidacy with the Falcons in 2024," Florio asserted.
The "Hudson Factor" is working against Belichick
One of the factors that has weighed most heavily against Belichick in the last three hiring cycles is his relationship with Hudson. Very few teams are willing to tolerate the distraction this causes.
From her intrusion into Belichick's interviews to the rumors that she was banned from UNC facilities, Hudson is a constant presence in the coach's life and work.
Belichick has repeatedly stated that he is completely focused on his job with the Tar Heels and that he is not considering a return to the NFL. However, all indications are that the NFL isn't pursuing him.
