Several NFL head coaches could be coaching for their jobs this weekend as Wild Card losses threaten to expand an already crowded coaching carousel.
There are currently eight head-coaching vacancies heading into the playoffs, and that number could grow depending on how Wild Card Weekend unfolds.
The Tennessee Titans and New York Giants began the cycle early by firing Brian Callahan and Brian Daboll during the season. After Week 18, the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders and Miami Dolphins also moved on from their head coaches.
That wave of dismissals has made longtime Ravens coach John Harbaugh the most coveted name on the open market - and his availability has put pressure on teams that technically aren't looking for a new coach yet.
McDermott could say goodbye to Buffalo this weekend
The Buffalo Bills have emerged as a sleeper team to watch. Sean McDermott owns a 98-50 record and has guided Buffalo to two AFC Championship appearances since 2020, but he has yet to get past Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason.
With Kansas City absent from this year's playoff field, some believe McDermott is running out of excuses. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggested an early and lopsided loss could force owner Terry Pegula to reconsider the franchise's direction.
"In Buffalo, it can be argued that the window has already closed on the Bills, and that the supreme skills and abilities of quarterback Josh Allen have created the impression that it remains open," Florio wrote
.
"An early, ugly exit against a Jaguars team that is, frankly, better than the Bills could be the thing that prompts owner Terry Pegula to make a change."
The Philadelphia Eagles are another team drawing league-wide scrutiny. Nick Sirianni has enjoyed sustained success since taking over in 2021, leading the Eagles to five straight playoff appearances and two Super Bowl trips. Even so, his job security may hinge on Sunday's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Giants are ready to pounce on Sirianni
New York Giants reporter Art Stapleton believes a loss could open the door for a bold move by owner Jeffrey Lurie.
"Giants fans should hope the Eagles win this weekend ... because if not, would Lurie fire Sirianni for Harbaugh? I think so," Stapleton said.
FS1 personality Nick Wright echoed that belief, calling Harbaugh a "perfect fit" for Philadelphia if the Eagles stumble.
"He's a culture CEO head coach," Wright said, adding that the Eagles' front office has shown a willingness to make fearless decisions if it believes an upgrade is available.
Both the Bills and Eagles play Sunday in the Wild Card round, meaning the league's coaching landscape could look very different by the end of the weekend.
