The NFL has officially set the opening contest of the 2026 preseason, announcing that the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers will face off in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on August 6, 2026, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

The game, which traditionally kicks off the league's exhibition schedule, will also coincide with the enshrinement of several iconic players into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, giving fans a unique opportunity to celebrate both the league's history and its future.

Arizona and Carolina enter the Hall of Fame Game coming off dramatically different 2025 campaigns. The Cardinals struggled to a 3-14 record, culminating in a season full of challenges and uncertainty. Their situation was further complicated by the decision to release former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray, signaling a major shift in the team's long-term direction.

Conversely, the Panthers surprised many by capturing the NFC South title with an 8-9 record, advancing to the playoffs and giving rookie quarterback Bryce Young invaluable postseason experience.

Carolina now enters 2026 with momentum and a roster focused on building around Young's development, while Arizona seeks to redefine its identity and rebuild around a new core.

The choice to match these two teams for the Hall of Fame Game carries a deeper significance than the preseason alone. Both franchises are represented in the 2026 Hall of Fame class, creating a meaningful connection between the kickoff game and the legends being honored.

Hall of Fame weekend highlighted by legends

For the Cardinals, Larry Fitzgerald will take his place among football's immortals. Regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, Fitzgerald finished his 17-year career with 1,432 receptions for 17,492 yards and 11 Pro Bowl selections, cementing his legacy as a cornerstone of Arizona's franchise history.

On the other side, Luke Kuechly, a former Panthers linebacker and the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, will be enshrined after recording 1,092 tackles, 18 interceptions, and seven forced fumbles in just eight seasons, earning seven Pro Bowls and five All-Pro selections.

Joining Fitzgerald and Kuechly in the 2026 class are legendary quarterback Drew Brees, kicker Adam Vinatieri, and running back Roger Craig, each with remarkable achievements that left an indelible mark on the game.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place during the same weekend, creating a festive atmosphere for fans in Canton.

NBC will broadcast the game nationally, allowing fans to tune in and witness the league's first live action of 2026. With Arizona and Carolina meeting under the shadow of the Hall of Fame, this matchup serves as a symbolic bridge between the NFL's storied past and its promising future.
