Brennan Marion took a leap of faith when he accepted the role of offensive coordinator for the Colorado Buffaloes. It wasn't the first time he had taken a risk-his career has been shaped by setbacks, resilience, and faith.

In mid-December, the Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders announced Marion's hiring, replacing Pat Shurmur.

Although Marion reportedly signed a two-year, $3 million contract, he left his position as head coach at Fresno State to join Coach Prime's staff.

While some have questioned the move, Marion remains steadfast, drawing strength from his faith and the lessons learned during the most difficult period of his life.

A career redirected by injury and faith

Marion, once a promising wide receiver, seemed destined for the NFL. But an ACL injury in his final year of eligibility derailed his career, ending his hopes of playing for the Miami Dolphins.

Another injury cut short his time in the CFL, forcing him to reassess his future. "I called on God in that hospital and said, 'Lord, if you get me out of here, I promise to help every kid I come in contact with,'" Marion recalled in a lengthy Twitter post.

Despite skepticism from others, he began coaching children while still on crutches. "I didn't have a vehicle; kids would come pick me up," he said.

The turning point came when the NFL called him again:

I decided not to go for a workout, even though that was my dream. After six knee surgeries on my right leg in four years, I decided to stick with God's plan.

Building a coaching career

Marion's decision to pivot from playing to coaching paid off. Over 15 years, he has built an extensive résumé across high schools and nine universities:

  • 2015: Arizona State (Offensive Quality Control)
  • 2016: Oklahoma Baptist (Running Backs)
  • 2017-2018: Howard (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks)
  • 2019: William & Mary (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks)
  • 2020: Hawaii (Wide Receivers)
  • 2021: Pittsburgh (Wide Receivers)
  • 2022: Texas (Passing Game Coordinator/Wide Receivers)
  • 2023-2024: UNLV (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks)
  • 2025: Sacramento State (Head Coach)
  • 2026 Colorado (Offensive Coordinator)

Now, despite critics suggesting his move to Colorado is a step backward, Marion is convinced he is following the right path.
