The University of Colorado and head football coach Deion Sanders appear to be at a standstill regarding a contract extension, raising concerns about his long-term future with the program.

Earlier this year, reports suggested that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had considered Sanders as a potential replacement for head coach Mike McCarthy before ultimately hiring Brian Schottenheimer.

In response, Sanders reportedly used the NFL interest as leverage to push Colorado's athletic director, Rick George, toward negotiating an extension.

In January, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt shared on The Herd that contract negotiations were in progress, with Colorado significantly increasing its financial offer. However, Klatt noted that Sanders' demands extended beyond salary, as he sought additional investments in assistant coaching salaries, facility upgrades, and NIL commitments.

Despite George publicly stating in December that an extension for Sanders was a priority, progress has stalled since Schottenheimer was named the Cowboys' head coach on January 24.

When asked about his contract status on Monday, Sanders gave a vague response that only fueled speculation.

"Maybe, I don't know," he said.

"I'm not worried about me. Let's take care of everyone else first."

While Sanders is known for keeping negotiations under wraps, his uncertainty left many Colorado fans uneasy.

Fans voice their concerns

With no deal in place, fans took to social media to express their frustration and concern over the situation.

  • "The biggest fumble ever if the school doesn't get this done," one fan wrote.
  • "If they fu** this contract extension up, CU fumbled for sure. I don't know what else they need to see-Deion Sanders needs to stay if this school wants to become a powerhouse."
  • "They need to back up the Brinks truck," another fan declared.
  • "He's gone if he finishes this season without a long-term contract," one user predicted.

As the 2025 season approaches, the pressure is mounting on Colorado's administration to secure Sanders' future before another program-college or professional-comes calling.
