Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada, and the pop singer Katy Perry have entered a relationship that has quickly become a media sensation because of the public roles each occupies. He was the country's top political representative, while she is one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary music.
This relationship had every element necessary to become a tabloid explosion, and that is exactly what happened. Now that they have confirmed their relationship and their status as a couple, everything they do is subject to widespread scrutiny. Yet the attention is not limited to them. In Trudeau's case, it also extends to his ex-wife and the mother of his children, Sophie Grégoire.
For anyone, the end of a long relationship is difficult, and that remains true even when the only remaining bond is shared parenthood. Although Trudeau and Grégoire no longer had a connection beyond raising their children, painful emotions still linger for the former television presenter.
In a recent appearance on the podcast Arlene is Alone, the 50-year-old spoke candidly about how she feels and what she is experiencing as her former husband enters a new relationship, and how that shift influences her own life.
The Canadian activist did not hesitate to discuss openly what her life looks like now as a single woman and how she is handling the situation as her ex-partner begins a new chapter with one of the most famous singers in the world.
The host of the podcast in which she appeared, Arlene is Alone, asked Grégoire about her reaction, and instead of expressing anger or distress about her ex-husband's new relationship and the overwhelming publicity surrounding it, she chose to respond with empathy toward the couple.
We're all human beings and stuff affects us.
How you react to stuff, is your decision. So I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.
Regarding how Trudeau's new relationship has affected her, Grégoire explained that she intends to control only what is within her grasp and allow the rest to unfold naturally.
I'm very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers; we're humans. What I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision.
She explained, and added.
Does it mean that I don't have emotions? That I don't cry, scream, laugh? No!
She concluded by emphasizing that, for her, the most important thing is to feel her emotions and allow them to flow, which she believes is the healthiest approach.
It's not always easy to live, but it's very adult.
Grégoire noted that embracing vulnerability continues to guide her path forward in meaningful ways for her.
