"As soon as possible". That may be what the PGA of America is saying about confirming Tiger Woods as their 2027 Ryder Cup captain. In a move to protect the future of the nation's golfing landscape, Wood finds himself in a situation where a decision must be made soon.

According to a recent report by the Associated Press, the 15-time major champion has been given a soft deadline to decide whether he takes the role or not. He was asked to lead Team USA at Adare Manor in Ireland before the azaleas bloom at The Masters this April.

The only candidate for the role

What really makes this case a funny one, is the absence of a "Plan B". Sources close to the situation, including veteran AP golf writerDoug Ferguson, have confirmed that Tiger Woods is currently the sole candidate being considered for the role.

While the U.S. typically leans on a committee to consider multiple legends, the 2027 matches in Ireland are seen as the ideal scenario for a Tiger Woods arrival. His deep personal friendship with J.P. McManus, the owner of the Adare Manor venue, makes his potential captaincy feel like the right thing at the right time.

The U.S. team is still searching for its first victory on European soil since 1993. If Woods accepts, he will be the face of a 34-year redemption project.

The difference between passion and duty

During the Genesis Invitational last week, Woods was remarkably candid about the mental and physical toll of his current role.

As the Chairman of the PGA Tour's Future Competitions Committee, Woods is the main architect of a massive change inside the professional golf schedule. He admitted:

"I thought I spent a lot of hours practicing in my prime. It doesn't even compare to what we've done in the boardroom. I'm trying to figure out if I can actually do our team... and everyone involved in the Ryder Cup... if I can do it justice with my time."

His dilemma is a really tough one to find a real solution to, as he refuses to take a job if he cannot give it 100% of his focus even though he would love to. Having turned down the 2025 captaincy for similar reasons, he is perfectly aware that a Ryder Cup captain the CEO of a multimillion-dollar emotional enterprise.
