- Formula 1. Why are Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton starting the 2026 F1 season so differently
The rapid rise of Kimi Antonelli is already starting to make a difference within the new generation of Formula 1. In just his second season in the category, the Italian driver has not only adapted to the highest level, but has also begun to redefine expectations of what a rookie can achieve in such a short time.
Since his arrival in 2025, Antonelli was seen as a talent to watch, but the start of the 2026 season has taken that perception to another level. With Mercedes, he has found a competitive environment that has allowed him to make an immediate leap in performance.
That growth became evident from the very first races of the year. In Australia, he finished second, securing a one-two finish for his team alongside George Russell. In China, he went one step further by claiming his first Formula 1 victory.
Beyond the results, his quick adaptation to the new 2026 cars has been one of the most talked-about factors in the paddock. While other, more experienced drivers are still adjusting to the new regulations, Antonelli has shown an immediate connection with the car, placing himself second in the championship standings after the opening rounds.
Another rising promise in F1
In that same context appears Oliver Bearman, another name representing the future of the sport. The British driver continues his development with Haas, where he has also shown positive signs at the start of the season.
His results have been consistent. In Australia, he finished seventh, scoring valuable points, and in China, he delivered one of his strongest performances by finishing fifth, maintaining a competitive pace and showing composure in key moments of the race. He currently sits fifth in the drivers' standings, reinforcing his steady progression on the grid.
However, the difference is beginning to show in the pace at which each driver is evolving. While Bearman is still building his path step by step, Antonelli has accelerated that process, going from prospect to contender in just a few races.
That gap does not necessarily define who will have the better long-term career, but it does reflect how quickly hierarchies can shift within the same generation. In today's Formula 1, talent remains essential, but immediate adaptation and the team environment can create separation right from the start.
