Prior to the fight against Romero, Ryan Garcia tried to reunite with his former trainer Eddy Reynoso, who has long been Canelo Alvarez's head trainer. They split in 2022 because Garcia felt Reynoso did not have enough time for him. A reconciliation was sought, but ultimately did not happen due to scheduling conflicts.

Garcia made the decision to work with renowned trainer Derrick James. Their partnership helped him recover from the loss to Gervonta Davis. James also trained Ryan for the fight against Devin Haney, which he won

The WBC lifted the suspension

Garcia had been barred from all WBC activity after using racial slurs and making offensive comments towards multiple communities during a live social media broadcast.
